Removal of sugars from food and beverage wastewaters by amino-modified SBA-15

In the context of removal biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) from food and beverages production wastewaters, this paper reports capabilities SBA-15 modified with (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane (S-APTES) N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]aniline (S-Aniline) in glucose, fructose sucrose at very high concentrations (350,000 mg/L for 350,000 170,000 sucrose), i.e. sugars most widely used as sweeteners beverage manufacturing. After determination main physico-chemical characteristics, study effect pH on S-APTES S-Aniline allowed to elucidate mechanisms involved. Based solid:liquid ratio, optimal experimental conditions were defined achieve a BOD5 simulated soft-drink wastewater 80%. The results show that lower adsorbent dosage is required respect current methodologies, representing an advantage especially disposal procedures exhausted adsorbent. This work offers proof concept integration amino-modified sorbents industrial pre-treatment wastewaters before discharging it sewerage systems.
